O artigo reflete sobre Salvador nos tempos atuais, partindo da identificação dos principais movimentos que compõem a lógica da era globalizada. No que diz respeito a cidades, sobretudo aquelas da periferia do sistema mundial, destaca as mudanças relativas aos novos termos da competividade entre negócios e lugares, bem como os impactos dos ajustes daí decorrentes sobre as metrópoles, transformadas no epicentro da crise social e urbana. Nesse contexto, Salvador e sua região metropolitana carregam um duplo problema: aos novos dilemas colocados pelas novidades da chamada era flexível, somam-se os de sua própria herança histórica, configurando um desafio que transcende o mero consenso em torno do crescimento econômico e se coloca no campo da constituição da cidadania.

Abstract

This paper analysis the role of the city of Salvador, Bahia, nowadays, starting from the identification of the main movements that make up the logic of the globalized era. With regard to cities, especially those on the periphery of the world system, this article highlights the changes on competitiveness among businesses and places, as well as those related to the impacts resulting from adjustments on the metropolis, transformed itself in epicenter of the contemporary urban and social crisis. In such a context, Salvador and its metropolitan region perform a twofold problem: the new dilemmas brought by the so called era of flexibility and the ones that come from its own historical heritage, setting a challenge that transcends mere consensus on economic growth and stands in the field of the constitution of citizenship.
