Este texto aborda um personagem especial do culto afro-brasileiro Exu, analisando a sua metamorfose, ao sabor das implicações do novo contexto, repercutido em sua forma plástica. Na manifestação do rito, a expressão plástica informa elementos sacro-estéticos em diálogos intensos entre o fiel e a representação. O que se tem de concreto é que a representação plástica das divindades africanas no Novo Mundo, apesar da sobrevivência de algumas marcas originais, fundamentais, agregou novos traços, fruto do contato com as manifestações da religião dominante, a católica. As alterações não se dariam de forma aleatória, teriam que ser mantidos vínculos remetentes as concepções originais. A ausência da mesma, ou distanciamento exagerado, colocaria em jogo a eficiência da prática litúrgica, ávida de resultados, razão primordial do rito e esperança dos fiéis. Até que ponto Exu resistiria a estas confrontações estilísticas, em defesa do seu original poder?

Abstract

This paper deals with a special character of the African-Brazilian religious rite, Exu, analyzing his metamorphose, taking into consideration the implications of the new context, reflected on his plastic shape. In rite manifestation the plastic expression provides sacred-aesthetic elements in intense dialogs between the faithful and the representation. What is concrete is that plastic representation of African deities in the New World, in spite of the survival of some original fundamental marks, has added new features, resulting from the contact with manifestations of the dominant religion, the Catholic Church. Changes would not happen at random, ties referring to original conceptions would have to be kept. Their absence, or exaggerate distancing, would put the efficiency of practicing liturgy at stake, and that practice is eager for results, the fundamental reason for rite and for the hope of the faithful. How far would Exu resist those stylish confrontations, in defense of his original power?
